There is certainly no credible pianist who would not love to be the proud owner of a grand piano but for the majority of individuals, there are two primary constraints…budget and space to accommodate this sizable instrument. However, the alternative to both of these issues is the baby grand piano. While lacking in grandeur, you will be able to fill your home with beautiful music. The rich quality of sound will always be a cut above the upright models due to the horizontal positioning of the strings. This size piano may also be listed in other terms such as home grand or petite grand. One might find this style in a smaller church setting or studio/classroom where the grand would take up too much space.

When speaking of the quality of sound and the strings being parallel to the floor, this is determined in the baby grand by the space and position of the strings when a key is struck. This results in vibration and the end result is a well-rounded tone and exacting note. While the strings and space are somewhat limited in the baby grand, the production of music is of a higher quality than the best of smaller instruments.

If considering the purchase of a baby grand piano from mail-order or Internet, be certain that you get exactly what you want. Read carefully for the dimensions and be sure that this item meets the measurements of less than six feet and approximately the same width as height. Some pianos for children are marketed under the same title but would hardly be suited for an adult and pricey as a toy. There might be some benefit in looking locally for a previously owned piano if you have a trained technician who can take a look before you finalize the sale.

This petite version of the grand piano can still become quite a conversation piece within the home and might become the gathering place for many home parties, especially during the holiday season when everyone loves to sing carols.

A spinet piano is a type of vertical piano, different from a grand piano because of the direction of the sound board. In a vertical piano, the soundboard runs vertically having the strings running downward. There are fives types of vertical pianos which are the console, the consolette, the spinet, the professional and the studio. Whenever there is a larger instrument, a smaller version of it is often referred to as “spinet.”

The spinet piano is the shortest of the vertical pianos, measuring in at about 36 to 39 inches in height. Because of the direction of the strings and the shortness in height, it is considered to have a lower quality sound than the other types of verticals. Due to it’s small case, a different sort of mechanism came about that doesn’t allow the keys to directly engage the levers. This causes a delay between the strike to the sound. This type of mechanism also makes the inside of the piano very difficult to service for tuners and repairmen. Disassembly is sometimes required to repair a spinet piano. The 39 inch models or higher contain a direct striking action.

This type of piano became available when a manufacturer introduced them as an affordable option during the depression and beyond. It was a good option for people of limited means or those with little space to devote to a piano. Due to the smaller size, they were less costly to manufacture, easier to transport, and easier to find space for in the home. They were the preferred piano for anyone under these circumstances into the 1990s.

The spinet enjoyed a heightened popularity for several decades. Although they are still manufactured and sold today, these days, the popularity of the spinet has declined. They are considered to be difficult to play by musicians because of the shorter keys, although it can be an ideal instrument for beginning pianists. They have largely been replaced by the newer electric pianos. Electric pianos are considered by most to have a superior sound than the spinet.

Compact and affordable, a spinet piano can be still be purchased in many musical outlets today even though the manufacturing volume has declined because it is a perfect starter piano for beginners.

If you are in the early stages of buying a piano, chances are you are starting this journey with very little knowledge about piano prices. Let’s face it; the average person does not make this type of a purchase on a regular basis, and may not have a clear understanding of the fair market price for a piano.

The process is further complicated by a set of variables to consider such as who will be the primary pianist(s), how long do you intend to keep it, and of course what is the true reason for wanting a piano in the first place. Is it going to be a noisemaker for young children or grandchildren? Will it sit and gather dust in a corner as a piece of forgotten furniture and not be properly maintained and tuned? Or is there a current or future musician in the picture ready to spend countless hours perfecting Bach or perhaps composing new music?

Once you have done the necessary soul searching to determine what the most practical piano purchase will be for your circumstances, start researching piano prices to determine what type of purchase will best fit your needs.

Begin your research by pricing new pianos from local or national retailers either through media advertisements or online. An Internet search will also provide various books, forums and other resources with compiled lists of piano values. The perfect piano may be available locally from a private seller, but just as you may hire a mechanic to check out a used car you are considering, consider having a professional piano tuner check out your potential purchase.

If you have visions of restoring a vintage piano for less than the price of a new piano, proceed carefully! You may find that restoring an old piano to the point where it is a fine musical instrument costs far more than purchasing a new piano.

A final thought on piano prices. It matters not if the purchase is for a local church, a cozy corner by the fireplace or a concert hall; time spent doing research for the right piano at the right price will be time well spent.

Nothing beats the sound of the tinkling ivories on a quality piano. But the key word there is quality. As any music lover knows, there’s a big difference between a quality and a sub-par piano. It is definitely true that you get what you pay for. In this day and age of bargain stores and warehouse shopping, one thing that should definitely be bought in a specialty store is a piano. The piano store can provide you with expert knowledge that most others could never give you. This is especially true if this is your first piano purchase. You should have someone with a complete and thorough knowledge of this delicate instrument.

Another more obvious advantage of using a piano store is the increased variety and selection. All the major brands will be represented and a sales person will be able to explain the differences and benefits of each. The sales person will also be able to help you find the size piano you need for your particular spot. Compare that to a general music store where there is only a small selection of pianos because of the need for all the other musical inventory floor space and you see immediately the reason why a piano store would be a better option.

After you’ve purchased the piano, a general music store or warehouse store is done with their sale. But with a store that specializes in pianos, you’ll find that most offer at least a limited warranty on your new piano. In addition, they may offer discounts on tuning or lessons for the newbie. They may also also offer repair services in the future. They’re a point of reference should you have any questions after the purchase.

A piano is a lovely instrument and one that should warrant your time and consideration before purchasing. Check out the store and make sure it’s a reputable one with the Better Business Bureau. Compare prices with other comparable stores so that you know you’re comparing like products. Then, know that your purchase is backed by a warranty and a store that will stand behind the products it sells. A lifetime of musical enjoyment will make you glad you chose the quality store and product.

Liberace would never have played without the ever-famous candelabra on his elaborate grand piano but was it the lighting or just the ambiance For sake of television, it was a signature accessory for this entertainer but in early days prior to electricity, this was a definite necessity for practical reasons…the ability to see the sheet music! The market offers a wide variety of battery-operated, electric, clip-on, floor and table piano lamps which offer lighting for the musician but are also multi-functional and can transition to desk or study lighting as well.

Searching for the most appropriate piano lamp for your needs will require assessing those particular points. Of the many different styles, the balance arm lamp allows for usage by any number of pianists due to the adjustable feature. There are lamp bases consisting of brass, marble, crystal and antique brass to blend in with many different decors. If more height is needed at your instrument, the adjustable arm floor lamp might better suit your needs. There is little variance in the price range from desk top to floor models.

Another interesting concept in piano lamps are the grand piano lamps which are the clip-on style. The clamps are lined with felt materials to avoid any damage to the music stand where they are positioned. This unit is designed to be light in weight, utilizing a minimal amount of space and offering portability as well. The illumination that is provided from this compact appliance will be adequate for the most serious of musicians. The pricing is relatively the same as the other styles using standard bulbs.

Of the many different lighting fixtures that meet the needs of the pianist, the desk lamp is one that offers flexibility in usage. This lamp can be at home on the keyboard and work equally well within the area of the home office. This might be the occasion when the purchase of a pair of matching lamps of your choice would be the right accessories for your home.

The grand piano has always been held in the highest esteem when the subject of the making of beautiful music was being discussed. However, when one takes into consideration the enormous space that this lovely instrument requires, not to mention the purchase price, it can easily be seen that few homes or household budgets could accommodate such an expenditure or a room in which to place it. Therefore, the console piano can fulfill any home-owner’s desire to enjoy either the playing experience for themselves or to be entertained by another’s musical talent. By the mere size alone, this instrument is suitable for the smaller music studio and even apartment spaces.

So what can be determined about the quality of the sound that omits from the console While the investment is considerably less than that of the grand piano, is the action and result sound comparable Obviously the grand offers the parallel position of the strings as it relates to the flooring beneath the instrument and the action is from the top down onto the strings which offers the high quality sound.

The vertical positioning of the strings within the console piano construction allows the action of the hammer in the upright position to strike and snap back via spring action awaiting the next key to be hit. There is a difference to be noted but this instrument offers great quality for its smaller size.

The console piano is in the mid-range in height of all the vertical pianos. It was during the early to mid 1900′s when interior designs were all about decorating to period styles and this musical instrument was made available to follow these trends. Whether Country French, French Provincial or Traditional, all of these are available, even today, to blend nicely into the home setting. The detailing for period pieces are more generally noted in the music stand and legs.

In more modern settings today, various other finishes are being used, such as wood with inlaid embellishments and lacquers which lean more toward the clean and sophisticated appearance. Excellent craftsmanship will only enhance the beauty as you experience the musical experience.

While the Yamaha Corporation of today is a multifaceted conglomerate, their beginnings in 1887 were strictly focused on keyboard instrumentation for the reed organ and piano. With this founding focus toward the manufacture of musical instruments, the corporation’s emblem to this day is still the inner-twined tuning forks even though their industry covers a wide-range of products from motorcycles to home appliances and much in between.

In the field of the instrument industry, they remain the largest producer of quality pieces of musical equipment. Yamaha grand pianos have graced the stages of concert halls around the world and never fails to live up to the reputation of the name.

There are many different styles and sizes of the Yamaha piano product to select from and in just as many varied woods and finishes. While none can deny the quality of the resonance that is heard from the grand piano, it is only practical to note that few homes can accommodate the size of such an instrument, let alone the price tag. If these factors are not an obstacle, one can find re-sales or previously owned items which are often at a greatly reduced price.

There are any number of the digital/electronic pianos that give a wide variety of sounds and accompaniment blends with other instruments such as rhythm and strings. The younger crowd seem to gravitate toward these multi-faceted products but for the serious pianist, nothing can compare to the standard piano.

If you are looking to purchase a Yamaha piano or any brand for that matter, it is always prudent to take along someone who can give good advice on the purchase. This would be especially critical if you are purchasing from an individual as opposed to a piano store. The instrument should be played prior to the purchase either by you or someone with you. The opinion of a tuner or technician would be ideal. Any instrument that you are investing your money is worth careful consideration and making certain that this product meets all of your individual specifications.

Moving a piano can be a difficult task. Make sure you plan your move in advance by assembling packaging items, getting equipment, and taking measurements. Piano movers are professionals who specialize in moving pianos. They have the equipment and know the safest and quickest ways to move a piano without damaging it. However, they can be expensive.

While residential movers are cheaper, you may not want to go that route. Some of them will want to take off the keyboard. This is something you do not want to do. They are also more likely to cause damage to your piano, which will cost you a lot of money to repair. Residential movers may not carry enough insurance to cover extreme damage. Piano moving requires a heavy duty dolly and other tools to pack up and move the instrument. Again, residential movers may or may not have what is required to move your piano safely and securely so do your research before hiring someone.

Professional piano movers can be found in the phone book or on the internet. Most of them will give you a free quote. They are more expensive, but these companies have the equipment and tools to do the job. However, many of them will not move pianos long distances. You’ll have to move your piano to a dealer where the company will then pick it up and move it for you. Professional movers are less likely to damage the piano and they carry enough insurance to cover even extreme damage or loss.

If you don’t want to use piano movers, pay attention to certain common sense tips to move the piano yourself.

Here are 8 tips:

1. Make preparations in advance.
2. Measure the piano and the room you are moving it into. Make sure the space allows access from all angles.
3. Assemble blankets and plastic pads to prevent scratches, dents, and weather damage.
4. Pianos weigh hundreds of pounds. You’ll need at least four strong people to move it, two in the front and two in the back.
5. Lift with your legs and not your back.
6. Close and lock the piano lid.
7. Move the piano slowly endways, not sideways.
8. If you have back problems, do not try to move it yourself.

One of the main reasons to use piano covers is to protect the piano from damage. Damage can be caused by:

Dust and dirt – these can wreak havoc on a piano’s finish, as well as getting into the cracks and crevices of the keys.
Children (and some adults) – how many times have you seen a child (or even an adult) beating on the piano keys or climbing all over the top of a piano Pianos should be kept covered to keep the temptation to climb and play on the piano to a minimum. It also lessens the chance of tempting someone to sit down and play a few notes.
Pets – cats love to climb all over furniture and the piano is no exception. A cat’s claws can cause a lot of damage. Dog’s love to chew on things, especially legs of wood furniture.
Humidity – can cause damage to the wood as well as the internal mechanisms causing the piano to require frequent tuning.
Sunshine – can cause fading and damage to the wood finish of the piano.

A few more things to keep in mind about taking care of a piano:

1. When a piano is kept covered, it shows that the owner takes pride in their piano and wants the instrument to be in good shape and last a long time.
2. Keeping a cover on the piano will help keep it tuned and ready to play at a moments notice.
3. Maintaining the piano will also help to retain or possibly even increase the resale value of the instrument, whether for your benefit or your heirs.
4. Most styles of piano covers are available in different fabrics and colors to coordinate with the decor of the room.
5. The cover also lessens the chance of chips and scratches in the finish of the piano.

Taking pride in caring for a piano will make you proud of your instrument and more willing to play it when you get the urge to pound a few keys.
